HELEN MAXFIELD
Helen creates limited edition linocuts from her home studio near Needham Market in Suffolk.
Her black and white designs have a bold, graphic quality where she enjoys the mark-making potential of the medium.
Helen’s colour designs are created using the reduction method, normally about four passes, often using blended rolls.
Helen’s inspiration comes from frequent sketching trips, mainly in the Suffolk countryside. Designs normally evolve from observational drawings and paintings. “I am very lucky to live within easy driving distance of beautiful scenery in Suffolk for inspiration. I look for scenes that have compositions that appeal to me. Generally they will be quite rural – either woodland, coastal scenes, rivers, streams, country lanes or paths alongside fields”. Hand-Made Cold Processed Soap. Made in Small Batches. Helen tries to include some life too – wildlife, birds and people. Her sketching trips out give her a bank of ideas for prints.
She has two main aims in her work: to convey her experience and impressions of the place she wants to depict and portray images that celebrate the natural qualities of linocut. She enjoys looking for patterns in nature and working out how she can translate those into cutting lino.
Helen has created linocut illustrations for a range of beer labels for 'Big Drop Brewing Co', labels for Scottish drinks company 'Middle Way' and also for design company 'Denomination'. One of her landscapes 'Winter at Carlton Marshes' was used as a design for a Suffolk Wildlife Trust Christmas card and she also has prints featured in 'Suffolk Jewels', a book about Suffolk landscapes.
