Towards the end of his professional career, Mike decided to return to Woodwork: something he had always been interested in, since his schooldays.
With encouragement of his wife, Mike attended a course at Suffolk College (now Suffolk University), in ‘Advanced Furniture Construction’. He was thrown into the deep end rather, as this course was intended for Students who has already been attending for three years!
That was a long time ago now and Mike has been designing and making furniture, sculpting smaller items and special commissions since.
Mike uses hardwoods from around the world, whilst paying close attention to the ecological aspect. He uses English woods if possible: Oak, Sycamore and Holly. Along with American Walnut, Cherry and Tulipwood.
Mike’s objective is to make things which are practical, yet at the same time, illustrate the care and craftsmanship that has gone into the making.
Mike quotes that “Craftmanship is the art of making the difficult look easy. Like so many things in life it is easier said than done!”
